Being a Master Student at Simula

A student pursuing a Master's degree at Simula will face interesting and exciting research tasks under excellent working conditions.

Historically, Simula has a close connection to the University of Oslo (UiO), and in particular to the Department of Informatics (Ifi). Each of the three research departments at Simula maps to a corresponding research group at Ifi, and there are several Simula staff members that are also faculty at Ifi. This long-standing academic tie includes teaching of courses, as well as supervision of students. There are also several examples of students at Simula who get their master’s degree from other departments at UiO, such as Department of Mathematics, or from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Students may also be associated with a foreign university.

As a master student at Simula, you will be part of our research environment. In addition to working on relevant topics under high quality supervision, you will get an introduction to the craft of research and in particular experience how research is done at Simula. Successful master students will have a good starting point for pursuing a career in research, at Simula or elsewhere.

Studying for a master's degree

The current selection of available master projects is presented on SSRI’s web site. As soon as you are considering a study for your master’s degree at Simula, you should contact potential supervisors in our research groups. In addition to the predefined master projects, it might be possible to design a project that is tailored for your interests and background.

Usually, the master projects offered through SSRI fall into one of two categories: (1) topics that are relevant to an ongoing research project; or (2) topics reflecting the supervisor’s wish to explore new ideas. The offered projects may be theoretical or practical, and may be suitable for short or long project periods. At the beginning of each semester, the research departments present some of the available master projects at seminars for potential students.

In order to be a master student at Simula, you must be accepted as a student in the master’s degree program at one of our collaborating universities. When you have completed the application for admission to the MSc program, it must be submitted to SSRI’s administration together with all relevant attachments. SSRI will check the consistency of the application, file a copy for later reference, and submit the application to the relevant department at the university.

Students studying for their master’s degree at Simula benefit from being part of an active environment, both professionally and socially. The students have access to a dedicated study room with individual workspaces and network connections. They can also qualify for reimbursement of the travelling cost of public transportation to Simula’s offices. There is also a student union at Simula, stud@simula.
