Event CBC Workshop on Computational Geosciences and Stochastic Simulation (Storstua, from Jun 06, 2008 09:30 AM to Jun 06, 2008 04:00 PM)
This workshop, which is internal to Simula, consists of two parts. In the first part, a series of presentations will give an overview of the current portfolio of research activities in Computational Geosciences. In the second part, Dr. Zenon Medina-Cetina (currently at NGI/ICG) will give a motivation for and an introduction to stochastic approaches to simulation. Although his examples will be focused on geoscientific applications, the principles are applicable to all types of simulation involving data that are subject to uncertainty. This introductory lecture will be followed by an intensive, practically oriented course in the early fall.
Event Writing Effective Research Proposals (Storstua, from May 08, 2008 09:00 AM to May 08, 2008 02:00 PM)

Professor Hans-Peter Bunge from the Ludvig Maxmillians Universität München will present some of his research group's work on mantel dynamics. Recently, he has developed a novel fluid dynamics inverse theory based on an adjoint approach for solid Earth studies in order to reconstruct Earth's evolution explicity back into the past. His group is also a leader in applying high-performance computing to problems in Geodynamics.
