Checklist for applicants
A variety of application material is formally required by the various entities involved in the application process for research projects at the University of Oslo, for projects at Simula, and for admission to the PhD program at the University of Oslo. This checklist for applicants should cover all formal requirements. There may be additional requirements for individual positions.
Important notes:
- This is only a checklist. Finding this page does not mean that there are open positions.
- Read the position announcement carefully. Your application will be discarded as spam if you send all of this to every address that you find.
For PhD student positions, there is a strictly enforced formal grade requirement (using the grading system of the Bologna agreement) given by Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo:
- Bachelor degree grades must have an (unrounded) average grade of C or better
- Master degree grades must have an (unrounded) average grade of B or better
- The Master thesis must be graded to B or better
We in the RELAY group do strongly prefer electronic applications. If we need certified paper copies, we will get back to you. Make PDFs of all you documents and combine them into one document (if possible) - we do NOT want Word documents. This is the required material:
- Material that is specifically mentioned in the position announcements.
- Your cover letter. State clearly the project and position that you are interested in, don't forget reference numbers if such are necessary. We would like to read about your research interests and their relation to RELAY's goals in this letter.
- Curriculum vitae, including:
- Your name (given, family), data of birth, nationality, sex, current address, phone number and email address.
- Your highest degree's name, educational institution, department and year of completion.
- List of your higher education including type of education, place, duration, and degree if applicable.
- List of your employments, including company/institution name and duration.
- Your publication list.
- Your thesis. That's your relevant master thesis for PhD student
applicants, and your relevant PhD thesis for PostDoc applicants.
Applicants who are not finished yet should include a draft. Send only
one even if you have written several.
- Certificates for all university level degrees.
- Mandatory only for applicants for a PostDoc position (desirable
for all):
3 of your peer-reviewed publications. - Mandatory only for applicants for a PhD-student position
(desirable for all):
Official grade sheets for all courses taken at the university level. In an integrated grade sheet, indicate the grades that were included in the bachelor and master educations, respectively. - For applicants for a PhD-student position with any university
education outside Norway:
official description of the grading system of every university-level institution, including an official mapping of grades either to the European credit system according to the Bologna agreement, or an official translation of the grading scale to a scale based on the percentage of successful participants. This is important to be able to evaluate the grades according to the grade requirements given by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo (see above). - For applicants for a PhD-student position with any university
education outside the University of Oslo:
official course descriptions or URLs for official course descriptions for all courses at the master level and above. - Any reference letter that you consider appropriate.
