PLASMA
PLASMA's goal is to understand and address the challenges in planning effectiveness specific to large agile projects.
Partners

The project is a collaborative partnership involving Simula, PROMIS AS, Statens pensjonskasse, Steria, and Accenture.

Research

Applying agile methodology in large software development projects introduces many challenges. For example, one may expect that the combination of autonomous teams and the necessity for an overall organizational control structure may lead to conflicts, and one may expect that Agile's informal means of knowledge sharing breaks down as the number of project participants increases.

PLASMA seeks to identify the specific challenges to effective planning in large agile projects. PLASMA currently uses the large agile project PERFORM at Statens pensjonskasse as a case study. Research methods include repertory grid analysis, project data analysis, and interaction analysis.

Focus areas

  • General threats to productivity
  • Release planning and how human judgment in planning is (not) supported and reflected in planning tools and models
  • Analogy-based estimation in groups and how this is done in practice versus how theory prescribes it
