Center for Biomedical Computing
Center for Biomedical Computing (CBC) is a Norwegian Center of Excellence with a vision of facilitating access to complex mathematical models for scientists. The primary application area is biomedicine, but the computational methodologies and software tools have relevance to many other areas of science and technology.
Informasjon på Norsk
The center's research focus is on developing open-source reusable
software tools for solving partial differential equations (PDEs),
robust numerical methods for coupled continuum problems, and advanced
multi-physics/multi-scale computer models, especially for biomedical
research. Some key topics are continuum mechanics, computational fluid
dynamics, fluid-structure interaction, turbulence modeling, solid
mechanics of soft tissues, cell models and ordinary differential
equations, electrical signal propagation in tissues, finite element
methods, finite volume and difference methods, complex and moving
geometries, heterogeneous media, stochastic uncertainty modeling,
numerical methods for ordinary differential equations, multi-scale
modeling, parallel (distributed and shared memory) computing, problem
solving environments for multi-physics applications, open-source
software development with Python, Fortran, C and C++ for Linux, Mac and
Windows, and scientific software engineering.

The Center for Biomedical Computing (CBC) was established in April
2007. The Norwegian Research Council awarded the center on the basis of a proposal.
The research in the center falls in six categories:
- Computational
middleware
- Robust flow solvers
- Cardiac computations
- Biomedical
flows and structures
- Computational biology
- Computational geosciences
CBC collaborates with some key partners at the University of Oslo, the
Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU in Trondheim), The
Norwegian Defense Research Establishment (FFI), Umeå University,
Cambridge University, Argonne National Lab, University of California at
San Diego, Texas Tech and INRIA (France) to mention some.
The center will play an important part in training a number of PhD
students and postdoctoral researchers, as well as the building of
general national competence in key ICT topics, including mathematical modeling and simulation methodologies.
The Center for Biomedical Computing is hosted by the Simula Research Laboratory
in Oslo, Norway.
Simula is a government-funded laboratory for long-term, basic research
within three key areas in information technology:
Network and distributed systems, Scientific computing, and Software engineering.
Simula collaborates closely with the Norwegian universities on basic
research, research education, and research innovation. Many employees at
Simula have adjunct positions at the University of Oslo and vice versa.
Master and Ph.D. students at Simula are enrolled at and get their
degree from the University of Oslo or another university.

Article about our cooperation with the University of Oslo, the Centre of Mathematics for
Applications (CMA) and Simula (CBC) to reform traditional courses in mathematics
intensive student programs. The reform consists of integrating
numerical methods, programming and visualization in basic bachelor
courses on mathematics, physics, mechanics, astrophysics, geophysics,
and so on. The integration is novel, also in an international setting,
and pedagogically highly non-trivial. The goal is to use computer
simulations actively to develop a deeper understanding of physical
sciences and mathematics, even at a very early stage in university
studies.
