Abstract
Semiconductor nanocrystals, also referred to as quantum dots, are nanometer sized aggregates of atoms. They possess unique physical properties which have in recent years been experimentally shown to be advantageous for biomedical applications such as imaging structures within the body and the detection and destruction of cancer cells. Research into the use of these quantum dots in biomedicine has grown rapidly in recent years and the approach promises to provide new insights into cell function and promote novel methods for disease treatment. In this talk, I will give a brief and non-technical description of quantum dots and their applications in biomedicine, and an overview of recent computational modelling work on such systems.
