What can we learn from software engineering textbooks?

1 long thesis

Background:

Software engineering textbooks include much information about concepts, methods and techniques. The goal of this thesis is to examine to what degree they include principles guiding software engineering works and how much evidence is there to support these principles.

What you will do:

  • Identify principles made in software engineering textbooks, starting with Ian Sommervilles books on Software Engineering.
  • Examine the evidence supporting the principles.
  • Discuss and summarize the findings. If possible, suggest improvements in how software engineering textbooks are designed.

The candidate should possess general software engineering knowledge. An interest in learning and education is an advantage.

What you will learn:

  • Principles of evidence based software engineering.
  • How to conduct a survey.
  • How software engineering education is and how it should be conducted.

The results of this master thesis are likely to be of high interest to the software education research community. Publication of results should therefore be a goal.
