This group was incorporated in the NetSys and Media groups
during the fall of 2010.

The telecom research group (telecom) is exploring research topics directly related to real-world problems experienced and foreseen in the telecom industry. Through strong relations and interactive collaborations with Norwegian players in this industry, the group will contribute to the societal impact of Simula. Even though the group experiences strong industrial influence, it will not compromise on the strong research culture of Simula. Instead, a long-term research perspective, an in-depth focus and a strive for excellent research quality are seen as keys to success for the telecom group.

Research focus

The group aims at being Simula’s focal point towards the telecom industry, potentially increasing the impact of all telecom-related research taking place at Simula. The group will primarily collaborate with a selected mobile operator and Internet service provider (Telenor), as well with some invited vendors, thus creating an environment for high-impact research and an arena for open innovation.

Research projects

Today, the telecom research group includes the SimTel Innovation project, which is a joint research and innovation project between Simula and Telenor. The research is divided into three main areas

  1. Wireless broadband and dynamic spectrum access (such as cognitive radio);
  2. ISP-friendly solutions for P2P applications, overlay networks and multimedia streaming; and
  3. Multi-link network access and future IP networking.

The first area applies to mobile operators, the second relates to ISPs, and the third area to both types of players. Furthermore, the first area requires radio competence, the second area demands insight into selected applications, services and solutions, while the third area demands good TCP/IP knowledge and understanding.
