Avatar: Immersive Remote-Controlled Robotic System over the Tactile Internet

Can we take the immersive tactile robot as the avatar in the real world? This problem will be investigated and solved in this master project.
Master

The Tactile Internet is revolutionizing the understanding of what is possible through wireless communication systems, pushing boundaries of Internet-based applications to remote physical interaction. Such remote interaction capability can be used in surgery, driving, drone-based transportation, immersive education, and adventure, etc. Although the community envisions the bright future of the tactile internet, few works implement the physical platform and specify the blockages in enabling a smooth quality of experience (QoE) during the interaction. In this project, the candidate(s) will work in a team to identify those blockages and propose the novel algorithm in network stack to enable the avatar in the real world.

Goal

The goal of this project is two-fold. On the first fold, a robotic platform with multiple wireless network interfaces available (e.g., LTE, WiFi, and 5G, etc.) should be built up. The robotic platform can be built up using off-the-shelf development board (e.g., Arduino, FPGA, etc.). User can operate and monitor the robotic platform remotely via wireless communication. On the second fold, the blockages that affect the QoE when interacting the physical world via the robotic platform should be identified. Based on that, a novel network protocol (e.g., the packet scheduling algorithm over multiple network interfaces, etc.), should be proposed and its performance should be validated via real-world experiments. The candidate(s) will achieve these goals in a team.

Learning outcome

  • Be one of the very first people to identify the problem and propose a potential solution in enabling a remote-controlled robotic system over the tactile internet;
  • Hands-on experience over robotic system design;
  • Deep understanding of applying machine learning (data-based design) and/or mathematical optimization (model-based design) in network protocol design;
  • Possibility to publish the result in and attend the top international conference.

Qualifications

The candidate(s) is (are) expected to have experience in programming and a basic understanding of network protocols. Preferably, the expertise in designing robotic embedded system and background in machine learning would be a big help, but not mandatory (as the point of a master project is to fill up the new skill sets).
