Alessio Buccino sucessfully defended his PhD

On Friday, January 17th, Alessio Buccino successfully defended his thesis “A computationally-assisted approach to neural extracellular electrophysiology with multi-electrode arrays”. The defense took place at the University of Oslo.

In his thesis, Alessio seeks to look at ways to interpret the measurements of brain activity. During his PhD Alessio has published an impressive 7 papers. He is also nominated for His Majesty the King's Gold Medal which is awarded to an outstanding younger researcher for scientific work at the University of Oslo. The work must be recognized as an effective contribution to the field's research literature. 

Summary

With the advent of high-density multi-electrode arrays, we are now able to measure the activity of hundreds of neurons simultaneously, even at the sub-cellular level. However, next-generation devices introduce novel grand challenges and the need for appropriate tools to handle the rich information that can be recorded. The work presented in this thesis has therefore focused on developing and benchmarking new tools and methods for using such devices at their full potential.

Prior to the defense, at 10.15, Alessio Buccino will present his trial lecture “Investigating activity of neuronal populations in vivo: challenges and opportunities for combining electrophysiology with other modalities”
