Francisco Javier Velázquez-García successfully defended his PhD

On Tuesday, May 28th, Francisco Javier Velázquez-García successfully defended his PhD thesis "Middleware Mobility Services for Self-adaptive Multimedia Processing in Ubiquitous Computing Environments". The defense took place at the University of Oslo.

The research in this thesis presents advances in the development of multimedia applications adhering to the ubiquitous computing paradigm. Multimedia pipelines are moved between devices and reconfigured to dynamically adapt the presentation of multimedia content. Architectural constraints and utility functions control the combinatorial growth of all possible pipeline configurations. Further proposed mechanisms for application mobility include the migration of Internet endpoint connections.

The results show that multimedia applications can be moved between heterogeneous devices without introducing noticeable interruption of multimedia sessions and without central servers. The proposed solutions are useful for component-based applications that process one or more data streams and use Internet connections.

The thesis is written within the field of Mobility of Multimedia Applications. The work has been conducted at University of Oslo and Simula Research Laboratory.

Prior to the defense, at 10:15 AM, Francisco Javier Velázquez-García held his trial lecture Cyber Foraging: History and Future.
