Launch of the SimulaMet Interoperability Lab

SimulaMet is proud to announce the SimulaMet Interoperability Lab (SMIL). SMIL is an experimental environment for research and innovation related to wireless technologies in a multi-vendor environment with focus on 5G and IoT.

The lab has been granted dedicated 5G and 4G wireless spectrum from the Norwegian Communication Authority for wireless coverage for the laboratory, making us one of few research institutions in the world to hold such spectrums for research purposes. 

SimulaMet is also pleased to announce two unique partnerships with Huawei Technologies and nLogic that are key to the success of this endeavour, as well as cooperation with startups such as TransPacket. Huawei Technologies provides the lab with cutting edge 5G and 4G base stations. nLogic is an experienced network infrastructure vendor in Norway, and has provided 5G-ready network infrastructure from Juniper Networks and firewalls from Palo Alto Networks to the laboratory. TransPacket provides the FUSION networking technology for 5G front haul access networks. The lab will also leverage the Simula advanced supercomputer, eX3, with equipment from IntelnVIDIA and Mellanox for advanced 5G applications using machine learning and AI as part of a 5G edge compute environment. 

SimulaMet is also extending an open invitation to all 5G ecosystem partners to contribute hardware and software technologies for integration in our interoperability lab in the center of Oslo, Norway. Our aim is to perform our 5G and IoT research in a multi-vendor configuration.

SimulaMet already participates in the EU H2020 research projects 5G-VINNI and 5GENESIS, working on building experimental 5G facilities. The new laboratory will extend these efforts and strengthen ongoing experimental activities by offering a hands-on environment for our researchers and collaborators to explore new innovations and perform high-impact research for industry, mobile operators, service providers and society at large. SimulaMet is also contributing to the OsloMet curriculum in advanced communication topics and plans to engage OsloMet student resources in experimental work related to emerging 5G services.
