Two new EU projects at Simula
Since the start of the current EU framework programme for research, Horizon 2020, Simula is the sixth largest Norwegian recipient of funding from the EU. Only SINTEF, Borregaard and the three largest universities have received more funding from the EU.
5G Verticals INNovation Infrastructure (5G-VINNI)
5G-VINNI will facilitate the uptake of 5G in Europe by providing an end-to-end facility that validates the performance of new 5G technologies, and explore solutions for vertical industries such as public safety, eHealth, shipping, transportation, media and entertainment and automotive. The project will leverage the latest 5G technologies, including results from previous 5G PPP phases. This approach employs advanced network virtualization, slicing, radio and core technologies. In addition a rigorous automated testing campaign will be employed to validate 5G under various combinations of technologies and network loads. 5G-VINNI will be run at four main sites located in Norway, UK, Spain and Greece. In addition, experimental sites will be established in Germany and Portugal. 5G-VINNI is coordinated by Telenor Group, the international telecom operator headquartered in Norway. 5th Generation End-to-end Network, Experimentation, System Integration, and Showcasing (5GENESIS)
A key challenge in 5G validation and verification is to integrate all the highly diverse results and technologies from EU, global as well as internal (corporate) R&D projects, to “glue together” the 5G picture and unveil the potential of a truly full-stack, end-to-end 5G platform, able to meet the defined KPI targets. The main goal of 5GENESIS will be to validate 5G KPIs for various 5G use cases, in both controlled set-ups and large-scale events. This will be achieved by bringing together results from a considerable number of EU projects as well as the partners’ internal R&D activities in order to realise an integrated end-to-end 5G Facility, which will consist of five sites located in Greece, Germany, Cybrus, Spain and the UK. 5GENESIS is coordinated by the National Center for Scientific Research “DEMOKRITOS” from Greece.
