TIPS: Early Phase Innovation Platform

TIPS: Early Phase Innovation Platform

(Norsk: Tidligfase innovasjonsplattform på Simula)

TIPS aims to strengthen Simula's infrastructure for early-stage technology transfer, broadening the application of research outcomes and fostering the development of profitable spin-outs from the research. The TIPS framework provides the necessary resources and support for researchers to explore and develop commercial opportunities from their research results.

Enhancing societal impact of research by shortening the distance from scientific advancements to commercially viable and socially beneficial solutions.

TIPS enables researchers to focus intensively on the potential for commercialisation of their idea, by liberating them from their routine duties and providing key commercialisation support. Technical and commercial challenges are addressed early and effectively, through support from Simula Innovation. As these early ideas mature into potential products and companies, so do the researchers develop into entrepreneurs.

TIPS framework - a smoother path from idea to product:

Commercialisation ideas are developed through 5 phases, from the first inspiration to an established company.

  1. Mobilization: By casting a wide net, TIPS will help mobilise researchers throughout Simula to consider the broader potential of both ongoing and completed research projects.
  2. Tech-transfer projects: Focused researcher time is dedicated to exploring the commercial potential of their findings, developing and refining their ideas with substantial support.
  3. Verification: Assessing the market needs and commercial viability of the projects, ensuring that they meet real-world demands and have potential for success.
  4. Networking: Building connections with investors and industry partners, providing mentorship and feedback to refine business strategies and prepare for market entry.
  5. Transformation: Successful projects may lead to the establishment of new companies or licensing agreements, supported by investment and strategic guidance from Simula Innovation.

Funding and duration:

TIPS is co-funded by the Research Council of Norway, under the call Tidligfase teknologioverføring (TTO-funksjon) 2025-2026, and will run from March 2025 to February 2027. The bulk of the funding is dedicated to covering researcher time and travel, so they can focus on their tech-transfer projects and network with potential partners or investors.
