Green AI for Sustainable Shipping (GASS) project funded by the Green Platform Initiative

Published:

Simula is a proud partner in the project Green AI for Sustainable Shipping (GASS), securing a 44 million NOK grant from The Norwegian Government’s Green Platform Initiative.

The project is led by the digital maritime technology provider, NAVTOR, and the main goal is to accelerate the green transition in society and the shipping sector. GASS will develop commercial AI-enhanced technology and Go2Market services to optimize the energy usage of vessels worldwide.

The shipping industry has an important milestone to reach in only 7 years - to halve their greenhouse gas emissions. The current CO2 footprint is at 1.2 gigatons yearly, and an important factor contributing to such a large footprint is the inefficient use of energy due to non-optimized voyage planning and/or execution.

Existing solutions to this problem rely on sparse data sources and simplified assumptions about a vessel and its environment when optimizing vessel and voyage performance, resulting in suboptimal energy usage.

GASS will challenge these established solutions by leveraging massive data sources to improve the energy efficiency of voyages through a range of operations, including the use of new AI technologies to optimize voyage routing and speed.

The project holds great environmental and economic value, enabling vessel owners and operators to contribute to the green transition by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and complying with the UN Sustainable Development goals.

If the GASS services are adopted by 30 percent of vessel owners and operators, it would lead to a substantial one percent reduction in the global greenhouse gas emissions.

Simula's role in the project involves leveraging our expertise in machine learning, specifically tailored for maritime applications. Senior Research Scientist Dusica Marijan will be leading the contributions from Simula Research Laboratory.

The Green Platform Initiative

The Green Platform Initiative is a collaboration between the Research Council of Norway, Siva, and Innovation Norway that provides funding for enterprises and research institutes engaged in green growth and restructuring driven by research and innovation. A total of nine research and innovation projects were announced by The Research Council of Norway to receive funding from the initiative on the 14th of December 2023.
