Summer internships program
Interested in working in a highly competent, challenging, and informal yet professional environment as an intern? Simula recruits summer interns to work together with motivated international researchers within ICT.
Note: We are not hosting internships in summer 2026. If you would like to be informed once applications open for summer 2027, please register here.

Simula is a publicly-owned research lab that is focused on five main research areas: communication systems, cryptography, machine learning, scientific computing, and software engineering. Our main objective is to reach new levels of understanding and to create vital knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value to society.
Internships topics
See our previous summer internship projects here.
Simula offers summer internships in all five of our focus research areas. The summer internship positions last for 6 weeks and take place during the period from mid-June to mid-August.
Summer interns are supervised by Simula researchers and embedded into the departments at our research units in either Oslo (Simula Research Laboratory and Simula Metropolitan) or Bergen (Simula UiB).

Research area: Communication Systems, Oslo
Simula's communication systems research targets the development of intelligent, resilient, and secure communication infrastructures. The strategic focus is to enable networks that support digital sovereignty, critical services, and long-term societal needs.

Research area: Cyber Security, Oslo and Bergen
Simula's cyber security research is driven by the pursuit of novel solutions and knowledge to enable a more secure society. This includes, but is not limited to, cryptography and privacy-enhancing technologies, security of emerging technologies, and evidence-based insights into the impact of implemented security measures.

Research area: Artificial Intelligence, Oslo
We focus on the mathematical foundations of machine learning, the experimental study of machine learning algorithms, and the application of machine learning in real-life applications including sports, human health and software engineering. We also develop machine learning methods that can be used in practical applications to process large amounts of data derived from multiple sources.

Research area: Scientific Computing, Oslo
Simula’s research team in scientific computing develops advanced computational methods, bridging mathematical theory and real-world applications, to study complex systems in select scientific domains.

Research area: Software Engineering, Oslo
Simula’s software engineering research concentrates on procedures, methods and tools for ensuring the reliability and integrity of complex software systems throughout their lifecycle in a socio-technological perspective, in close collaboration with industry and the public sector.

Simula looks for students that:
- Are currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mathematics, physics, data science or informatics, or other specialisations in technology
- Are curious and interested in research, and enjoy working on challenging problems, both independently and in teams
- Have strong academic results
- Are proficient in English (both spoken and written)
Due to short-term employment, applicants must already be permitted to work in Norway, i.e. not requiring new visa processing.

Simula offers:
Simula offers interns a highly competent and engaging workplace with an inclusive and social workplace culture. Interns are given the opportunity to work closely with international researchers and to contribute scientifically to the research projects, as well as participate in other relevant activities such as guest lectures. The summer internships program offers a variety of events for interns, including inspirational academic lunches, social activities and networking events, as well as training courses (e.g., critical reading of research papers and pitching techniques).
Interns are hired for a six-week period, starting mid-June, and are paid an hourly-based wage (note: Simula does not cover expenses such as travel, housing, etc.). Subsidised lunches and free coffee/snacks are provided at the office location.
