This year’s report shows that the positive development in the experienced stability of mobile broadband networks, which we reported the last three years, has continued in 2017, says Ahmed Elmokashfi, responsible for the report. Users experience fewer service outages and very low packet loss. At least two thirds of the measured connections now enjoy a 99.99% uptime.
The report follows up on the application performance measurements from last year. A key observation is that the stark increase in mobile data usage is pushing mobile networks closer to their capacity limits. The difference between off-peak and peak download speeds is now clear and significantly higher than in 2016.
New in this year’s report is measurements of the effect of signal repeaters that are installed on board NSB trains. These measurements draw an optimistic picture showing an evident improvement in experienced 4G coverage on trains. For example, on the railroad stretch Oslo-Roa-Hønefoss, the experienced 4G coverage increased from 84% to 96% for Telenor and from 64% to 100% for Telia when using repeaters.
