According to ThomsonReuter's Web of Science, this places the paper in the top 1% of its academic field.

ThomsonReuter's Web of Science measures citation rates for published papers, and takes into account that different academic fields have great variations in their citation rates. The citation rates are determined by ESI(Essential Science Indicators), a compilation of science performance statistics and science trends data based on journal article publication counts and citation data from Thomson Scientific databases.According to the Web of Science ESI “Highly Cited Paper" definition, The team’s paper received “enough citations to place it in the top 1% of its academic field based on a highly cited threshold for the field and publication year."
