Quantum collaboration in the Nordics: QuNorth visits Simula

Published:

Today, Simula Research Laboratory had the pleasure of hosting the leadership team from QuNorth: CEO Ebba Carbonnier, CTO Kasra Nowrouzi, and CPO Cathal Mahon at headquarters in Oslo.

QuNorth is a Danish company that has received sizable funding from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, the export and investment fund of Denmark that is in some ways comparable to the Norwegian Oil Fund.

Over the past year, Simula has been in close dialogue surrounding the establishment of QuNorth and its groundbreaking new initiative: Magne. Scheduled to go live at the start of 2027, Magne is positioned to be the world’s most powerful commercial level 2 quantum computer, bringing unprecedented fault-tolerant computational capabilities to the Nordic region.

Exploring the frontiers of Quantum research

Our Quantum@Simula team, including researchers from the NorQSoft and QCNA National centres, gathered alongside industry partners for a highly productive plenary session, in which we explored how Magne’s unique architecture can be leveraged to solve complex, real-world problems.

During the session:

  • QuNorth presented the technical vision for Magne and introduced their Flagship Competition.
  • Simula researchers and partners delivered pitches showcasing our ongoing research and how we aim to pioneer applications on this world-class hardware.
  • 1:1 deep dives continued into the afternoon, spark-matching Nordic research ambitions with QuNorth’s technical capabilities.

Why this matters

Access to a level 2 quantum system of Magne’s will open a new forefront for quantum computing capabilities in the Nordics. It gives our research ecosystem a competitive advantage in unlocking breakthroughs across material science, optimization, and secure quantum software.

A huge thank you to the QuNorth team and all our fellow colleagues for making today's discussions so invigorating. The conversations and shape the future of the Nordic quantum landscape takes from here is very promising!
