Simula announces entrepeneurial scholarships

Published:

Simula announces two scholarships for budding IT entrepreneurs. The two winners will each get NOK 500 000 in an entrepreneurial scholarship in order to develop their business idea. One of the scholarships is dedicated to a female entrepreneur.

Simula sets no criteria as to what the money will be used for, but it must be IT-related, and the entrepreneur must be able to document that the money has been used to develop their business idea. The application must be submitted before January 15, 2017.

Simula mayoffer to invest in the endeavour if the project develops nicely. However, you are free todecline Simula's investment offer if you get a better deal elsewhere.

One percent female entrepreneurs

Simula's motivation for dedicating one of the scholarships toa female entrepreneur is due to the extremely low percentage of female entrepreneurs within the tech industry. Areport by Investinor states that among the 1600 companies in their registered deal flow, less than 1% technology businesses have a female CEO or Director of the Board. This corresponds with the results in a report from the EU that states that only 1% of all technology businesses in Sweden are owned or managed by a woman. In Simula's portfolio of spinouts there are presently no companies owned or managed by women.

Thereasons why there are so few tech startups led by women include lack of role models and negative stereotypes concerning women and entrepreneurial activity.Encouraging the increased activity of female entrepreneurs within the field of IT will generate value for society in the form of innovation and jobs that we are presently missing out on.

Submit your application before January 15, 2017.
