Simula & Inria collaborate on resilient software

The Inria Associate Team proposal RIPOST has been selected for funding!

RIPOST (ResIlient and RePrOducible SofTware) is the successor of RESIST_EA, which has existed as an Inria Associate Team since 2021. The associate team is part of a long-standing research collaboration between Simula and Inria’s center in Rennes within software validation and verification.

The RIPOST associate team will research the foundations of “Resilient Software” – software systems which can resist failures without significantly degrading their functionality. Over the past years, resilient software systems have become extremely important in various application domains, such as automated driving and medical imaging.

By combining Inria’s and Simula´s expertise in software engineering, resilient software, and AI-based software testing the RIPOST team will specifically work on two main research leads whose expertise is already attested by co-authored publications, namely:

  1. Validation of AI planning resilience, where the goal is to develop methods and tools to test policies for automated planning applications;
  2. Learning resilient performance models of configurable systems, where the goal is to understand the fundamental support provided by ML in the performance modelling of configurable systems and the generalisability of these models with regard to inputs (workloads, benchmarks, etc.) and deep variability.

The RIPOST associate team will be composed of ten researchers, five from the VIAS department at Simula in Oslo and five from the DiverSE team at Inria Rennes. The associate team will be jointly led by Professor Mathieu Acher at INSA of Rennes and member of the DiverSE team, and Research Professor Arnaud Gotlieb from Simula.

About Inria associate teams

Inria is France’s leading research institute within computer science and applied mathematics, and is a European research powerhouse with a strong track record of excellence in basic research and applied industrial research. The Inria Associate Team is a program that refers to a renewable joint research project, which runs for three years at a time, between an existing Inria project team and a research team from abroad. The two partners jointly define a scientific ambition with a clear added value for each institution, a research plan, and a bilateral exchange programme.

RIPOST is the fifth associate team established between Inria and Simula since 2021, of which four are active after the expiration of RESIST_EA’s project period. These associate teams are important strategic cornerstones for the extensive research collaboration between the two organisations, shown through various projects funded by the European Union.
