For many years, bandwidth has been the focus of ISPs and Internet researchers. It is, however, becoming clear that interactivity to a large degree depends on latency, not throughput. This leads us to new efforts in order to reduce the experienced latency without sacrificating too much of the bandwidth. The talk presents the bandwidth/latency dilemma, summarizes some of the research avenues that are being pursued on the topic, and gives advice on what you can do today to reduce the experienced latency on your connections.
