Building Europe’s next-gen general purpose AI in CEREBRA-AI project

Published:

Simula Research Laboratory is proud to announce its participation in the new CEREBRA-AI project. This ambitious European initiative aims to deliver a sovereign, "Trustworthy-by-Design" general-purpose AI (GPAI) platform that bridges the gap between today’s static AI models and the complex, evolving needs of high-stakes industries.

As a flagship effort under the European Commission’s GenAI4EU initiative, CEREBRA-AI addresses fundamental challenges in current AI technology, such as the tendency for models to "forget" old knowledge when learning new tasks and the lack of grounding in physical reality.

CEREBRA-AI aims to have a significant impact on Europe's future. This project helps Europe become a world leader in creating AI that focuses on people's needs and follows European values. It ensures that Europe can build its own powerful AI technology rather than having to rely on companies from other parts of the world. By creating "digital twins" or virtual versions of real-world objects like factories or cities, we can use this AI to test ways to make industries run more efficiently and use less energy. CEREBRA-AI will serve as a foundation for a trusted European AI network, sparking new inventions that keep Europe both technologically advanced, environmentally friendly, and aligned with broader EU goals.

Intelligent mobility in the city of Paris

While the project focuses on foundational AI research, its impact will be validated through high-impact pilots. Simula is playing a key role in the project's mobility use cases, specifically collaborating with the City of Paris (Ville de Paris), for the creation of synthetic mobility data for urban planning.

A strong Norwegian presence

CEREBRA-AI brings together a large consortium of 32 partners across 14 countries.  Norway is particularly well-represented in this effort, with five national partners:

  • Simula Research Laboratory
  • SINTEF
  • Asplan Viak
  • University of Oslo
  • Meteorological Institute

This pan-European effort ensures that the next generation of AI is developed according to European values of transparency, accountability, and digital sovereignty.
